Salzkammergut
For
detailed driving directions, use Via
Michelin (click on "Driving Directions").
For
the best time, do not stay at a big hotel. You'll have a great
time if you stay at a small hotel, a guest house or pension, such
as the examples that follow (Note, I do not receive compensation
from any of the following - I am merely providing examples):
Marienbrücke
(Gmunden)
Christine
(Mondsee) Aberseehof
(Wolfgangsee) Sallerhof
(Salzburg) Blobergerhof
(Salzburg) |
A
must when in Austria. From Vienna (by car), take the A1
west to Salzburg, then take the Regau exit to
Gmunden.
If you plan to stay overnight in Gmunden, stay at the Waldhotel
Marienbrücke (PHOTO1,
PHOTO2). Don't miss the Gmunden
Pottery. Travel along the Traunsee
down to Hallstatt
(a UNESCO heritage site) and then a few kilometers more to see the
ice cave at Obertraun.
Next, return to Hallstatt and take highway 166 towards Gosau. Take
highway 162 at Gosau, then just before Salzach, take the exit
towards the A10. Exit to Hallein (Bad Duerrnburg) to visit the salt
mine. Spend some time in wonderful Salzburg,
then take the Grazer Bundestrasse (B158) to St
Gilgen (take the cable
car to get a great view). Head over to St
Wolfgang, then back on B158 to Bad Ischl. Take the B145 a
short distance, then turn on the Ischler Strasse (B153) to the Attersee.
Next, take the B152/B151 to Mondsee
(see the church
where the wedding scene was filmed in the Sound of Music). Mondsee
is next to the A1, and it is clear sailing back to Vienna! You'll
need 4 or 5 days to get this trip under your belt. |
